TRANSPORTATION

When You Arrive
WESLI provides free airport service from the Dane County Regional Airport in Madison.

Bus
Madison's bus system can take you almost anywhere in the city. Taking a bus to WESLI is very convenient because all city buses come to and from the Capitol Square, where WESLI is located. A monthly bus pass is $38.50, allowing unlimited use of the bus system. Individual bus fares are $1.50 for a one-way trip.

Student on bikeBicycles
Bicycles are an easy way to move around Madison. Many students buy a bicycle because they are cheap. You can buy a used bicycle for about $50 or a new bicycle for about $250. On many Madison streets there are special lanes for bicycles.

Walking
Walking is a great way to get around in the downtown area while also getting good exercise. Because WESLI is located in such a central place, there are dozens of restaurants and good shopping within a 5-10 minute walk from the door of WESLI. Some apartments and dorms are located within a 5-15 minute walk as well.

Taxi
There are several taxi companies in Madison. When you want to take a taxi, you call one of the taxi companies and tell them where you are and where you wish to go. They will send a taxi to pick you up, usually within 5-15 minutes. Taxi fares are charged by the mile. Most taxi rides will cost between $3-10 from the downtown area.

Car
Very few students at WESLI have their own car. If you want to drive in Madison, you will need to take a written driving test and a road test, and get a Wisconsin Drivers License. A currently valid drivers license from another country is valid for up to six months.

Long-Distance
If you want to travel long-distance in the U.S., you will probably go by car, bus, train, or airplane. Roads are very good, making driving easy if the distance is not too far. The bus system is also very good, allowing you to go anywhere in the country. You can take trains (Amtrak) to many destinations. Trains are preferred by some because they are comfortable and an excellent way to see the countryside. For air travel, you can easily fly out of the Madison airport, or you can travel by bus to the Milwaukee (Wisconsin) airport or to the Chicago (Illinois) airport for departures. Sometimes better fares can be found from Milwaukee or Chicago, but it is always more convenient to fly directly from Madison. The Madison airport is only a 10-minute drive from downtown Madison.
