Teacher Spotlight: Ally Merten

You might meet Ally on your first day at WESLI, you might see Ally singing and playing her guitar in the WESLI student lounge on the last day of the session, or you may see Ally in the classroom.  She really does it all here at WESLI: Registration, New Student Orientation, Activities, Volunteering AND she teaches!  Here is a little more information about Ally so you can get to know her better.

Where are you from?

Burlington, WI

What is your favorite thing to do in Madison?

In Madison, I love to sit at the Memorial Union Terrace with friends and watch the sunset.  I love to go hiking on Wisconsin’s many hiking trails.  I especially love all of the trails at Devil’s Lake State Park – and it’s only an hour from WESLI!

Favorite restaurant in Madison?

I have two favorites: Red Sushi & Sushi Box.  Red Sushi is only a couple of blocks from WESLI.

Favorite Book?

I love reading Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse Series.

Favorite Quote:

Where the words fail, music speaks. – Hans Christian Andersen

When you’re not at WESLI what do you enjoy doing?

I love to write music, sing, play guitar, and play piano.  I am working on my first album.  I plan to record my first song, “Like They All Did“, by the end of this month or early September.  For updates on my music, you can check out my Facebook Page or follow me on twitter.  You can check out my YouTube page here.

What inspired you to be a teacher?

I have always wanted to help others.  I also understand how difficult it is to learn another language.  It is important for all students to have someone to encourage them.  I love watching my students become better at English and more confident in themselves.
